More than 300 firefighters and 21 aircraft fought against the flames on Saturday night and early hours of Sunday, in an attempt to control a wildfire in Azuebar.

The fire, apparently caused by a lightning strike, began at 20:30 local time (18:30 GMT), after which air and ground means were sent to fight the flames.

"[The fire] started late in the afternoon, almost sunset, so the airplanes have barely been able to discharge water on it," explained a firefighter, adding that "t has evolved rapidly due to the high availability of wood and the low humidity that we have suffered during these three days.”

The virulence of the fire forced the residents of the Castellon municipality to be evacuated preventively in the middle of the night, before being relocated to the neighbouring towns of Soneja and Sot de Ferrer.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Firefighter (Spanish): “[The fire] started late in the afternoon, almost sunset, so the airplanes have barely been able to discharge water on it. It has evolved rapidly due to the high availability of wood and the low humidity that we have suffered during these three days. It has reached the top very quickly, it is a terrain with a lot of wood and difficult access, so is difficult to establish anchor points.”

SOT, Coordinator (Spanish): “This fire was generated precisely when we were deployed in another fire nearby, in Sueras, and when we came here it was practically controlled, but a sudden change in temperature plus the wind from the west that has arisen has caused it to quickly get out of control and right now we are still working on it, for that reason, it has gotten out of control due to the temperatures that we have been suffering after many days of heat.”
