No plans to bring ‘constitutional challenges’ to court over state border ‘issues’: Frydenberg

No plans to bring ‘constitutional challenges’ to court over state border ‘issues’: Frydenberg

The federal government have no plans to bring “constitutional challenges” in relation to “border issues” from the states, according to Treasurer Josh Frydenberg.

Several state premiers have been vocal about their plans to continue closed border policies even after reaching the 80 per cent vaccination target set out in the National Cabinet plan.

“What we have said, is we want the states and the territories to reopen in accordance with the plan,” Mr Frydenberg told Sky News Australia.

“At 70 per cent, and at 80 per cent, you see that easing of restrictions".

Mr Frydenberg said he could not see the need for state borders to remain closed when the 80 per cent target is reached.

“It would be ridiculous that we would open international borders for someone from New South Wales or Victoria to go to Canada before they could go to Cairns.”
