Once called a “basket case” by Under Secretary of Political Affairs Ural Alexis Johnson in 1971, Bangladesh has made significant progress over the last 50 years. The country reports higher GDP per capita than India or Pakistan, has made strides in female empowerment and representation, and has seen literacy rates soar and infant mortality plunge. In fact, prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, Bangladesh’s economic growth surpassed 7% for four consecutive years, a rate higher than Pakistan, India, and even China.
Yet these advances are frequently overlooked, leaving Bangladesh with a poor reputation on the global stage. While political, social, and economic problems persist, it is necessary to recognize the progress of the country.
