La Palma volcano drone view of extensive lava flow
The full extent of one of the streams of lava flowing from La Palma’s Cumbre Vieja volcano was captured on Wednesday in aerial footage posted by Spain’s Geological and Mining Institute.
The volcano has continued to spew lava, ash, and smoke into the air 24 days since it first began erupting.
Spain’s National Geographic Institute (IGN) said it had detected around 66 fresh earth tremors in the eruption zone on Wednesday, one with a 3.9 magnitude. The ash column reached 3,000 meters high, the IGN said.
On Tuesday, between 700 and 800 people were told to evacuate from Los Llanos de Aridane as lava advanced toward the municipality, bringing the total number of people displaced by the eruption to about 6,800, according to El Pais.
