Tesla continues to see demand that far exceeds its production capacity. What is a company to do when demand continues to increase but output does not keep up? Well, they increase prices.
This will be the 11th price change of 2021 from Tesla, which is quite a feat in the last 11 months of the year. This time, all the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y trims increased $1,000.
Another update seen on the Tesla configurator shows a new color option for free. You can now chose white and midnight silver metallic for no additional cost. The blue remains a $1,000 option, Black increased to $1,500 and Red remains $2,000.
Interestingly enough, we are also seeing varying delivery timelines for a few Tesla Model Y and 3's. Getting the base Model Y or Model 3 will take longer to delivery than if you add a color or upgrade the wheels. This seems to be an impact in wheel supply, or Tesla is trying to bolster average selling price.
Either way, after hearing the Tesla Q3 earnings results this week, I was surprised to see such a substantial increase so soon. With record margins, Tesla seems to be pushing for even more, and for the time being, people are continuing to line up to pay these higher prices.
As we have been watching delivery windows for the Model Y and Model 3 continue to push farther out, it was clearly only a matter of time before Tesla implemented another round of price increases. At least this time Tesla has targeted the lowest price trims of Model Y and Model 3.
Not great news, but I would not expect to see this slow down anytime soon until demand starts to wane, or production starts to increase faster than demand.
