Cowboys owner/president/general manager Jerry Jones said Tuesday that he already is in Missouri, a full five days before Dallas comes to Arrowhead Stadium to face the Chiefs.
Jones told the Shan & RJ Show on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas that he was in friendly territory.
"Well, I'm actually talking to you from Missouri right now. And it's not any other game in Missouri, I'll tell you that," Jones said. "And I'm in Cowboy country, I believe, in Missouri."
Is there a place in Missouri that loves the Cowboys? In 2018, SeatGeek created a map of NFL fandom by county, and nearly all of Missouri supported the Chiefs. In fact, the Chiefs also had the most out-of-state counties following them. In second place: the Cowboys.
But the large fan support for the teams is not why Jones is eager to see his Cowboys face the Chiefs.
As James Palmer of the NFL Network noted, these are two of the best offenses in the league, with both ranking in the top 10 in multiple offensive categories.
Jones said he knows beating the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium will be no easy task, and that's why it would be a huge victory for the Cowboys.
"Everybody's so excited over this matchup, and I am too. I have such respect for their coach, I have such respect for their organization," Jones said. "And they've certainly had a lot of success these past several years. And it's got all of the matchups of going into the lion's den, they have a great atmosphere. All of that is there and they've got a outstanding team.
"If we go up there and could come out of there with a win, it would be a hallmark win for us this year."
Jones was asked what he thought of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes when he played at Texas Tech, if he remembered the Cowboys' scouting report for Mahomes and just how amazing Mahomes has been.
Mahomes' success hasn't come as a surprise to Jones, whose Cowboys took defensive end Taco Charlton with the 28th pick in that year's draft.
"I think he has been true to form. I do. You say well, if that's a fact, then why weren't 20 teams up there emptying the house to try to get him?" Jones said. "But his style, his athletic ability, his speed, all of the things that serve him well, and make no mistake about it, as you know, he stayed at Texas Tech when some pretty good quarterbacks moved on that were behind him out there that ended up being starters in the NFL. So he's no surprise. I think it's interesting how his particular style has compromised defenses, certainly his first few years. I think as time moves along, he will adjust but defenses will adjust too.
"But you're not going to take away his gift. And that is to just make plays. And he's out there to make plays. And so ... I've seen at the quarterbacks in the last years and years that literally carry a team and I would put him on the top of that list or right there at the top. What they've done a great job though, is they put some talent around him that match his skills."
