U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said after a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Stockholm, Sweden on Thursday, that Ukraine “in no way poses a threat” to Russia and accused the Russians of a “massive disinformation campaign.”
Blinken said there would be “serious consequences” to Russian aggression against Ukraine, including high-impact economic measures.
Ukraine says Russia has amassed more than 90,000 troops along their long shared border, while Moscow accuses Kyiv of pursuing its own military build-up.
His comments came after a meeting with Lavrov, in which the foreign minister said Russia does not want a “new conflict” in Ukraine despite tensions running high in the region.
A day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called for direct talks with Russia in order to end the war with Russian-backed forces in the eastern Donbass region.
Both Russian and Ukrainian military forces held drills and exercises along their respective borders as tensions continue to mount along with increased military presence from both sides.
