Introduction:
The chosen theme for this semester’s PED course is ‘Proposed Development of Manufacturing Facilities for Medical Devices in Malaysia’. The course will provide opportunities for final year undergraduates to work as teams in producing suitable proposals to plan, design and develop projects which are beneficial to people in this country and upgrading healthcare system in Malaysia.
Background:
The healthcare sector is a leading driver of economic growth in Malaysia. Changing demographics, a more affluent society, and more health-conscious lifestyles have led to the creation of a robust domestic industry (Ribbink, 2014). Malaysia has an internationally lauded healthcare system that is accessible to nearly all the population. The success of the country’s healthcare sector can be attributed to investments in world-class facilities resulting in both private and public hospitals providing specialist services in addition to training medical practitioners abroad. In Malaysia, the medical devices industry spans a wide range of industries from rubber and latex, textiles, plastics, machinery and engineering support and electronics. Under the Eleventh Malaysia Plan (RMK-11), the Government has identified medical devices as one of the high potential growth sectors.
